Their fur is made up of hairs that are hollow, like a polar bear's; this is not to reflect light as the bear does, but to reduce weight for easier, less taxing flight. A Schattarneki's bones are also relatively light, though not hollow like a bird's. To make up for this lighter skeleton, Schattarneki have developed an extra layer of protection on their bones: a very thin layer of minerals (mostly iron) that hardens to a shell over the bone itself. Sexual Dimorphism: Schattarneki do display limited forms of gender-based dimorphism. Males are larger and heavier than females, but their bodies are stockier and often appear shorter than a female's. Males are the only Schattarneki to grow "elbow spikes", which are similar in appearance to a hatchling's "wing spikes". These elbow spikes are usually the same color as the stomach plates and wing spikes, and are used for defense. These spikes grow in adulthood. Females have more delicate features and their structure is overall more lithe and lean than a male's. Neither gender is noticeably stonger, faster, or smarter than the other despite these physiological differences.
