Physical Description:
Balion is a large lycanthroceros, standing about 5 feet tall at the shoulder (~60 inches). He has the basic body shape of an ungulate (think caribou or whitetailed deer). He appears to be a nice blending of Karkadann (mythic Arabian unicorn, looks a lot like an oryx or kudu) and wolf. His ears and tail are wolflike, as are his forepaws. His back legs are cloven-hooved like an antelope’s. All four of his legs have “typical unicorn” hair-tufts near his feet. His face is basically antelope-shaped, with a larger jaw/muzzle area to accommodate his canine/carnivore teeth. (He’s actually an omnivore with strong tendencies towards full carnivorism.) He also has a small “typical unicorn” beard on his chin. His eyes look like a wolf’s, with a rounded pupil, and shift in color from ice to dark blue. His fur is longer than an antelope’s and shaggy/fluffy. His single horn is sinuous rather than straight like a Western Unicorn’s, and although it’s spiral in texture, it looks like a white strip “wrapped” around a black base. It’s about 35” long (yep, a little less than 1/3 his total height.)
His fur color is mainly reddish-brown with thin white stripes along his sides (generally at least 10 stripes). Along the bottom area of the stripes, near his belly, are several scattered white dots. There is a ridge of black fur along his spine, and his legs are banded black-white-tan. At the very base of his throat where it joins to his chest, he has a large white horizontal stripe. His ears and tail are grizzled sandy brown/gray like a wolf’s pelt. This is very, very confusing, but just think of his markings as a mixture between male and female nyala antelope.
He has an unusual mythical trait: at any given time, he has seven scars on his body, no more, no less. However, they are not actual scars from battles he’s engaged in. Instead, they’re mystical “ancestor scars” from great battles that his karkadann ancestors fought in the past. Because of this, they appear on different places on his body every day, sometimes shifting places several times a day. So, this means he might have three scars on one flank and four on the other, or all seven on his face, or two on his legs, one on his face, and four on his sides, etc.
Personality/History:
Balion is a Lycanthroceros, a chance crossing between the rare and almost-extinct karkadann, or Arabian Unicorn, and a wolf. Long ago, Balion’s father traveled out of the Arabian Peninsula, seeing less inhabited lands where he could find respite from the human hunters who wanted to rug-ify him. Now, karkadann are not your peaceful virgin-loving white-as-snow Western Unicorns. They’re bloodthirsty fighting beasts who have been known to battle elephants and rhinoceroses and win. The only thing that soothes them is the song of the ring dove, which is unfortunately also leaning towards extinction. But I digress. This exceptionally fierce karkadann (for Balion’s father was known amongst mythic beasts as a creature to be feared, having once slain a gigantic dragon in Egypt, centuries ago) paused at a water hole one evening and happened to bend to lap at the water at the same time as an Arabian Wolf. The she-wolf, whose own species was also dwindling in population, eyed the karkadann, sizing him up for dinner. The karkadann, not above stomping an obnoxious endangered wolf into the sand, answered her challenging gaze. The two of them leapt into battle, and quickly found themselves oddly evenly matched. The karkadann was powerful and muscular, but the much smaller she-wolf was swift and really, really dodgy.
Several hours later, both of them were exhausted and trembling. They each conceded the battle to each other, and shared a drink at the water hole. They agreed to travel out of Arabia together, beginning the next morning. They spent the hours of the night conversing with each other, and discovered many similarities despite their differences in species. In the following weeks they traveled together, and through a bit of magic and perseverance (try not to picture it), Balion was conceived.
Balion was born “on the road”, so to speak, and was given a name by his father, an unusual practice amongst both wolves and karkadann. (Balion’s father named him after the dragon he had slain long ago out of respect to the creature’s valor). Balion spent his first few years wandering with his parents, trying to find a land untainted by humans. He has a generally negative opinion towards humankind, as both of his parents spent his childhood telling him horror stories about the fleshy ones. He and his parents often encountered other karkadann and wolves, so Balion was fairly well-socialized and knew the cultures and habits of both his component species.
As Balion neared maturity, he grew restless and impatient with his parents, who were still very much in love with each other and spent several hours each night giving each other googly calf-eyes. In disgust he ranged out on his own, wanting to fight gigantic mythological creatures as his ancestors had. Unfortunately, humans have killed off most of the mythics in his native lands, so now he wanders rather aimlessly, seeking his purpose and feeling (although he would not like to admit it) very lonely. In his absence, his parents have had a multitude of other Lycanthroceros offspring, and it’s highly possible that Balion will cross paths with his siblings someday, but whether these meetings will be serendipitous or bloody is as yet a mystery…
